Frequently Asked Questions

What should we wear for our family portrait?

This is by far the most asked question. And for good reason, you are investing a lot of money into your family portrait and you want the best possible results. Our best response: when you look at your family portrait, what is the most important details you want to see? Is it your family grouping? Their faces?  The composition and flow of the arrangement? If you are answering yes to these questions then the answer is easy: wear one color or two matching coordinating colors. In our portraits, you will often see people wearing black or dark tones. There is a good reason for this. When you view the portraits, you see the people, not the clothing. But there are other options. You can do what we like to refer to as Pop Art Family Portraiture. That is normally done on a white background and has funky clothing that reflects the times and the place where your family is at right now. The image is less traditional and the posing can be fun. Whatever way you go, here are some tips:

If you want a timeless family portrait to hang on your wall for many years:

1) Wearing one solid color, in non faddish styles will allow you to look at your portrait 10 years down the road and still not know whether it was taken in 2010 or 2020.
2) Black has a very slimming effect, lighter colors and especially white seem to add weight.
3) Long sleeves! Short sleeves give us many other things to worry about, such as making sure no one’s arms look fat, to spaghetti like.
4) Jeans are fine, as are dark dress pants, or longer skirts. Dark shoes, not white sneakers, or even barefoot can be an option. Avoid patterns & logos on clothing, as these are often distractions.
6) Pets are welcome!
7) This kind of portrait is especially good if your family is very young or all grown up or extended. It has a timeless elegance that will stand the test of time.

If you want your family portrait to reflect NOW and you plan on updating every few years:

1)      Then we would suggest something more contemporary.

2)       The background will usually be plain, and you can just about wear anything.

3)       The clothing should reflect the trendiness or “non trendiness” of yourself and your kids.
This works really well with families who have teenagers with radical ideas…

This is the kind of image you will look at get a chuckle with five, ten years down the road.

5) Bring novelty items of interest to you and your family such as hockey gear, golf clubs, dance costumes, anything that says who you are at the time!
6) Pets are welcome!
7) Style is looser and generally more laid back.

If you want an Environmental Family Portrait (usually outdoors):

We prefer to do these early in the morning or later in the day when the sun is lower on the horizon. We do not photograph a family mid day outdoors. The reason is quite simple; it is the worst, non-flattering light you can have. And if you want outdoors we should pick a theme. Cottage life, parks, open fields, or even the funky graffiti walls for the Pop Art Family portraiture are some options. Clothing should reflect the environment and the season. Many of the same principals mentioned above can apply here.

What if any, makeup should I wear?

There are two types of people that fall into this category. Those who wear makeup and those who do not wear any at all. For those that do wear makeup, we tell them to wear as much as they would normally wear if they were going out for an evening. You can get away with a little more than you would wear say going to work. For those of you who say “I don’t wear make-up!” We only ask that you apply (or have someone apply) a light foundation for you. It smoothes out variations in skin color.

How far ahead are you booked?

This would depend on the time of year and the time you would like to have booked. Sometimes you have to wait for a month and another time you could get in within a few days. Don’t assume we are too busy, call us! We will do our best to accommodate you.

I am getting my High School Casuals, what should I bring with me?

Again we suggest if you wear make-up, a little more is better than less, you can’t notice more in the pictures. If you don’t ever wear makeup, we suggest you apply some foundation, (or get someone to apply it for you). As far as outfits the sky is the limit. Depending on the session you booked, the number of outfits can vary, but bring lots of clothes. Casual, dressy, stuff you would wear every day, stuff you would wear going to the dance! If you have hobbies, sports interests, dance, your pet, your friends, your boyfriend, your girlfriend, your guitar. You get the idea!

How much will it cost us?

We‘ve often heard from our clients once they have made their purchase, the following statement: “That was not as expensive as I thought! I heard of people spending thousands here!” This may be true, some have invested a substantial amount on beautiful portraits and frames here, and some have invested thousands, but certainly not every client spends that much, and it is not a requirement to do so! Many people have invested much less than that, often in the hundreds. Let’s face it; we all expect to pay more for high quality service and high quality products. You will not get a better product anywhere else in this province! We stand by that. We do not believe in pressure sales…our product speaks for itself! What you spend is entirely up to you. It can range from a few hundred to yes, a few thousand! But everyone is welcome here and everyone is treated equally!
